Alexandria Aces Join Texas Collegiate League
The Texas Collegiate League has announced that the Alexandria (LA) Aces have joined the league for the 2010 season. Alexandria is the second new team to join the Texas Collegiate League this off season and the first outside the state of Texas.
The Aces have a long and rich history. The franchise actually started in 1907 in the old Class D Gulf Coast League. In 1914, the Cincinnati Reds started conducting Spring Training in Alexandria and in 1925 the franchise became the Alexandria Reds in the Class D Cotton States League. The franchise continued through several iterations up until 1972 when the team changed their name to the Aces and became a Class AA team for the San Diego Padres. That affiliation lasted just four years and then the Alexandria franchise went into hibernation.
In 1994, the franchise was reborn as part of the independent professional Texas-Louisiana League. In 2006, the Aces became members of the independent United League, and in 2009, the Aces were members of the independent Continental Baseball League.
The Aces will play their home games at historic Bringhurst Field. The Texas Collegiate League is in the process of re-doing their 2010 schedule which will be released soon. The 2010 season will include a split-season, where the league will crown a fist-half and second-half champion.
