The As were one of the joys of my baseball life.

My small team of college guys played games in Clarinda; and the experience was one of the season's highlights.

I watched them win the NBC world series on my birthday in 1981. By then I, like many fans at the tournament, had adopted the A's. Their spirited, gutty, upbeat come-from-behind win was one of the most enjoyable games I've ever watched.

I'm now a college coach in California. After 30+ years' coaching, I can tell you Merle is was one of the most-gracious men in the game....perhaps second only to Buck O'Neil, in my experience.

I work at the Firehouse across from Waters Field and was wondering when the season was going to start. I am saddened to learn that there will be no college ball this summer. It is one of the best perks of working here. I hope I am still assigned here next year when they resume.

What a great article! Our son Brandon played for Clarinda in 2007 and had such a good time he came back in 2008. We went to go see him play in his second season with the A's and being from the Los Angeles area in California we could not believe that there are actually nice people in this country. A wonderful little town!
