Coppell Wins Texas Collegiate League Championship
The Coppell Copperheads have claimed the 2009 Texas Collegiate League Championship by defeating the Victoria Generals in a best-of-three series. The championship is the third for Coppell since the inception of the Texas Collegiate League in 2004.
Going into the series, the Generals were favored to win the championship. With a record of 30-14, the Generals finished first in the league during the regular season. The Copperheads were clear underdogs. They had finished the year in third place with a record of 21-26. Even so, Coppell peaked at just the right time and beat the Generals in two consecutive games to win the championship.
In the second and deciding game, the Copperheads jumped out to a lead of 13-5. Matt Curry (TCU) homered twice for the Copperheads and Austin Goolsby (Embry-Riddle) homered once to give Coppell the big lead. But the Generals came roaring back and cut the Coppell lead to 13-11. It was then that Copperhead Coach J.T. Blair called on pitcher Jared Stafford (Dallas Baptist) to stem the tide. Stafford shut down Victoria to earn his second save in as many nights.
