outer-banks-daredevilsFormer Outer Banks Daredevil Nathan Johnson died from injuries sustained in a toughman contest held in Oklahoma City.  Johnson played for the Daredevils of the Coastal Plain League in 2007, suffered a fractured skull in the contest.  He was rushed to the hospital when he became unresponsive.  Doctors placed him in a drug-induced coma.  He died this past Tuesday.

At the time of his fatal injury, 23-year old Johnson was engaged to be married.  His fiance’, Andrea McKerley, is expecting their first child.  In a special ceremony held at his bedside this past Monday, Johnson and McKerley were wed.

Johnson was an organ donor.  Upon his death, a four-year old in critical condition received his liver.  His kidneys were also donated for transplant.

Johnson was a product of Butler Junior College (KS) and Southeast Oklahoma State University.  While with the Daredevils, the right-handed pitcher had a 1-1 record and a 2.38 ERA over 22.2 innings.

A fund to help cover Johnson’s medical expenses has been set up a Oklahoma’s Legacy Bank.  Parties interested in donating to the fund should contact Susie Maeder at Legacy Bank at 405-485-9333.
