Hyannis Welcomes The Harbor Hawks

Submitted by admin on Monday, 22 March 2010No Comment

hyannis-harbor-hawksThe Hyannis Mets announced last week that they would be changing their name.,  The big announcement was set for Sunday at the teams annual Spring Fling event.  And the new name is…The Hyannis Harbor Hawks.

The Harbor Hawks name was inspired by the osprey and fish hawks that can be seen around Hyannis Harbor and McKeon Park, where the Hyannis entry in the Cape Cod Baseball League plays their home games.

The change in name was likely due to the rule that MLB implemented last year that required teams sharing a team name with a big league baseball team to purchase their logo gear directly from MLB.  The added expense encouraged the Orleans Cardinals to change their name to the Orleans Firebirds last off season.  The Chatham Athletics changed their name to the Chatham Anglers last year as well.

Three Cape Cod League teams continue to use MLB team names.  They are the Bourne Braves, Harwich Mariners, and the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.

More information can be found on the Hyannis Harbor Hawks website.
