New League, New Team Announced in Illinois
The Great Plains Baseball League will debut next summer as the newest summer collegiate wood bat league. The league and its first team, in Rockford, Illinois, were introduced by team principle, Joe Stefani at a news conference in Rockford.
The new franchise in Rockford will play its home games at historic Marinelli Field. Stefani will serve as the team’s first general manager. One of his first orders of business will be to oversee the “name the team” contest that the franchise will be running. He’ll also be heading up efforts to hire a manager and recruit players for the 2010 season.
The Great Plains Baseball League anticpates having four teams for its inaugural season. The teams will play a 54-game schedule beginning Memorial Day weekend 2010. Other teams and locations will be announced soon.
