texas-collegiate-leagueThe Texas Collegiate League has named Joaquin Hinojosa (Brazos Valley Bombers), Matt Juengel (East Texas Pump Jacks), and Rett Varner (Coppell Copperheads) as their Players of the Week.

Hinojosa could have won the award as either a hitter or a pitcher.  The versatile incoming junior from  Texas A&M hit .333 for the week with two homeruns.  He’s currently tied for the league lead in homeruns.  Hinojosa also earned two saves for the Bombers during the week; another category in which he shares the league lead.  For the year, Hinojosa is hitting .305 with four homeruns and eight RBI.  He also has a 2-1 record as a pitcher and he has not allowed an earned run this season.  In 16.0 innings, Hinojosa has earned six saves in six save opportunities, given up eight hits, struckout 27 and allowed 7 walks.

Juengel is the first Texas Collegiate League player this year to be named “Player of the Week” twice.  This past week, he hit .533 with three RBI, seven runs scored and an .800 slugging pct.  The sophomore from Texas A& M is hitting .319 this summer with four homeruns, eight doubles, 24 RBI and 27 runs scored.

Varner, a sophomore at Texas-Arlington, becomes the first Texas Collegiate League pitcher to earn the “Player of the Week” award for a second time this year.  For the week, Varner pitched 7.0 innings of two-hit shutout baseball.  This season, the righthander is 4-2 with a 1.17 ERA.  In 46.0 innings, he has given up 26 hits, struckout 57 and allowed seven batters to reach on walks.
